Repair or replace? Start with the cause.
Weak suction can come from an obstructed hose, a full collection container, a filter problem or a leak. Replacing a power unit will not correct a blockage elsewhere in the system. If the cause is uncertain, book central vacuum diagnosis first.
Repair may make sense
A specific fault can be identified, suitable parts are available and the rest of the unit is in serviceable condition.
Replacement may make sense
The motor or controls require substantial work, parts are unavailable, or the existing unit is unsuitable for the home.
Upgrade the cleaning tools
A compatible hose or powerhead may improve handling and floor cleaning even when the power unit is working correctly.
Send these photos before choosing a replacement
- Model label: include the brand, model number and voltage.
- Complete power unit: show its mounting, inlet and exhaust connections, with clearance around it.
- Wall inlet: show the opening and any electrical contacts without removing the cover.
- Hose ends and powerhead: show the connectors and labels.

Can I change central vacuum brands?
In many homes, a different brand can be considered while retaining sound piping. Mounting, inlet/exhaust layout, voltage and accessory connections still need to be checked.
Will a larger unit fix low suction?
Not if the restriction is in the hose, piping or filter, or if there is a significant air leak. Diagnose the system before choosing extra capacity.
