Dyson Vacuum Maintenance Tips:
Dyson vacuum cleaners are designed to clean thoroughly without the use of bags or excessive heating. They use canisters, bladeless fans and washable filters. If it’s been a few years since you’ve given your Dyson a deep clean, then rinsing it could improve its performance.
Cleaning the Filters: Unplug your Dyson cleaner. Detach the canister. Open the latch on the top of the canister to free the first filter.
Read the top or side of the filter to see how often it is recommended that you clean the filter. For most vacuums, it is between one and six months.
Examine the rubber edges of your first filter. If they are damaged or the cloth is torn, you should replace your filter.
Turn on your sink tap. Run cool water over both sides of the filter, turn it over and ring it out. Repeat several times.
- Wring it out thoroughly the last time. Place it upside down on a windows sill.
- Turn it over after 24 hours. Let it dry for a total of 48 hours after a deep clean and 24 hours after a monthly clean.
-
Dyson recommends using cool water instead of warm water for the entire cleaning process.
Remove the second filter. Depending upon your model of Dyson, this filter will either be housed under the canister or inside the ball. Open the latch on the canister or ball to access and remove the filter.
-
Unlike the top filter, the second filter will most likely be rigid.
Turn the filter upside down. Run cool water over the bottom of the filter for 10 seconds. Then, flip the filter to dump the water down the drain.
Tap the filter on the sink edge after you flip it to remove extra dirt. Repeat the cleaning process 10 times
Place the filter upside down on a sunny windowsill for 24 hours. Then, flip it and let the other side dry for 24 hours. Ensure this filter is completely dry before you put it back in the vacuum, since it is housed near the motor. A wet filter can damage your motor.
-
Unlike the top filter, the second filter will most likely be rigid.
Cleaning the Canisters:
Look for the filter that removes the outside of the canister from the inside. It is usually a colored latch. Lift the latch and pull the canister apart.
Open the top of the canister, where your first filter was stored. Keep it open as you wash the inside of the canister, so that water can pour through the openings.
Scrub the interior of the canister under running water. Use your hands to loosen hair, dust bunnies or other waste from around the grey interior.
Flip the inside of the canister upside down. Run cool water through the rubber interior and let it flow out the back. Continue until the water runs clean.
Set the interior bin aside. Place the exterior part of the plastic canister in your sink. Wash the inside and outside with cool water.
- Dyson does not recommend using detergents on this bin.
Place these parts aside to dry for 48 hours in a well-ventilated area.
Look for traps at the base of your hoses. These are small sections that can be accessed to remove clogs. Flip them back with a small amount of force and remove any waste that has accumulated.
- Replace the hoses by latching or clicking them back into place.
- Small Dyson vacuums may have traps that you can not clean.
