Central Vacuum Systems: Types, Replacement Planning & Installation Checks

Choosing a central vacuum means checking both the power unit and the installation around it. The unit, piping, wall inlets, hose and cleaning tools need to work together. For a replacement, start by documenting the existing system before comparing new models.

Understand the collection system
Bagged systems collect debris in a specified replacement bag. Compare the correct bag type, access and ongoing supply needs.
Bagless systems use a reusable collection container. Check how the container is emptied and how the model’s filters are maintained.
Hybrid systems offer the collection options described by their manufacturer. Read the exact model instructions; “hybrid” does not mean every model supports every arrangement.
Cyclonic describes a separation method, not every installation requirement. Check the individual model’s filtration and exhaust instructions rather than treating all cyclonic units as identical.
Six checks before replacing a power unit
- Electrical supply: record the existing unit’s voltage and have the new model’s circuit requirements checked.
- Physical space: measure mounting and service clearances, including space to empty the container or change bags.
- Pipe connections: identify inlet and exhaust locations and any adapters the installation requires.
- Controls: check the low-voltage wiring and inlet arrangement.
- Cleaning tools: identify the hose, wand and powerhead connections.
- Maintenance: compare the actual supplies and procedures for the models you are considering.
Compare models without relying on one headline number
Coverage ratings and advertised power figures are useful only alongside the installation requirements and stated test conditions. Compare the complete model specifications and the cleaning equipment you plan to use.

Power units and attachment kits are different purchases
A power unit may be sold without a hose or floor tools. An attachment kit may include those tools without the power unit, piping or installation. Read the package contents and match the wall inlet and electrical connections before ordering.
Diagnose the existing system before replacing it
A loss of suction does not by itself establish that the power unit needs replacement. Tell us whether the problem affects one inlet or the whole system and whether anything changed before the fault appeared. The existing model, hose and installation photos help narrow the next step.
This Ace Vacuums video introduces common suction-loss checks. Follow your model’s instructions and arrange service for faults that require diagnosis.
Prepare for an installation conversation
Send the current power-unit label, a wide photo of its mounting area, the power connection, wall inlet and hose handle. Include the property location and whether you are planning a new installation or replacing an existing unit. Contact our central vacuum service team to discuss the required work.
