The Ultimate Vacuum Troubleshooting Guide: Common Problems by Brand

Is your vacuum losing suction, making an unusual noise, leaving dirt behind, shutting off, or refusing to start? This Vacupedia guide walks through common vacuum problems, what to check first, and when a repair may be the better option.

      Start Troubleshooting Troubleshoot by Brand
      Quick Answer

What Should You Check When Your Vacuum Stops Working Properly?

Start with the simplest causes: check the power supply, dust bag or dirt container, filters, hose and airflow path, floor head, brush roll, and visible blockages. If the vacuum still has a problem, identify the exact model and consult the manufacturer's instructions or a qualified repair professional.

      1. Check Airflow Look for a full bag or bin, clogged hose, blocked inlet, or restricted airflow path.
      2. Check the Floor Head Inspect the brush roll, nozzle, floor tool, and visible debris around moving components.
      3. Check the Machine If the issue continues, identify the model and determine whether service or a replacement part is appropriate.
      Safety First

      Before Troubleshooting Your Vacuum

Vacuum cleaners contain electrical components and moving parts. Keep troubleshooting limited to safe, user-accessible checks unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically provide additional procedures.

Important: Always switch the vacuum off and disconnect it from the power source before inspecting a brush roll, removing a blockage, opening a service area, or handling internal components. For cordless models, follow the manufacturer's instructions for safely handling and removing the battery when applicable.
      First

      Stop the Vacuum

Turn the machine off before inspecting the hose, brush roll, floor head, filters, or other accessible areas.

      Inspect

      Look for Simple Causes

Check for obvious blockages, a full dust container or bag, a dirty filter, tangled hair, or an improperly connected accessory.

      Escalate

      Know When to Stop

Burning smells, smoke, damaged electrical components, repeated shutdowns, or unusual electrical behavior should be treated as reasons to stop and seek qualified service.

      Common Problems

Common Vacuum Problems and What to Check First

Many vacuum problems have more than one possible cause. Use these checks as a starting point rather than assuming that a single symptom confirms a specific failed component.

      1
      Suction

Vacuum Has Weak or No Suction

Reduced suction can be associated with restricted airflow, a full bag or dirt container, dirty filters, a blocked hose, or an issue around the floor head.

      • Check the bag or dirt container.
      • Inspect accessible filters.
      • Check the hose for visible blockage.
      • Inspect the floor head and nozzle.
      • Reconnect accessories securely.
      2
      Pickup

Vacuum Runs but Does Not Pick Up Dirt

If the motor is running but debris remains on the floor, inspect the floor head, brush roll, nozzle opening, airflow path, and the selected floor setting where applicable.

      • Check for a clogged nozzle.
      • Inspect the brush roll.
      • Remove visible hair or debris safely.
      • Check the floor tool connection.
      • Review the model's floor-setting instructions.
      3
      Brush Roll

      Brush Roll Is Not Spinning

A non-spinning brush roll may result from tangled debris, a blockage, an incorrectly fitted floor head, a belt or drive issue on applicable models, or another model-specific fault.

      • Turn the vacuum off first.
      • Inspect the brush roll for hair and debris.
      • Check the floor head connection.
      • Look for obvious damage.
      • Use model-specific instructions for further checks.
      4
      Shutdown

      Vacuum Shuts Off During Cleaning

Repeated shutdowns can occur when airflow is restricted or when a machine detects a condition that requires attention. The exact behavior depends on the vacuum design.

      • Allow the machine to stop safely.
      • Check for visible airflow restrictions.
      • Inspect the bag or dirt container.
      • Check accessible filters.
      • Follow the model's instructions before restarting.
      5
      Noise

Vacuum Is Making an Unusual Noise

A new rattling, grinding, squealing, or high-pitched sound should not automatically be treated as normal. First check for accessible debris or an improperly fitted attachment.

      • Stop the machine.
      • Check the floor head.
      • Inspect accessible airflow paths.
      • Check attachments and connections.
      • Seek service if the noise continues.
      6
      Odor

Vacuum Smells Like Something Is Burning

A burning smell should not be ignored. Stop using the vacuum and disconnect it from power. Do not continue operating the machine to determine whether the smell disappears.

      • Turn the vacuum off.
      • Disconnect it from power.
      • Do not continue testing it.
      • Check for obvious external damage only.
      • Contact qualified service if needed.
      7
      Dust

Vacuum Is Blowing Dust Back Into the Room

Dust escaping from a vacuum can be related to an incorrectly fitted bag or container, damaged seals, an improperly installed filter, or another airflow problem.

      • Check the bag or container installation.
      • Inspect accessible filters.
      • Check for visible damage.
      • Confirm covers are correctly closed.
      • Stop using the vacuum if damage is suspected.
      8
      Hose

Hose or Attachment Has Little Airflow

If suction seems normal at the machine but weak at an accessory, inspect the hose, wand, nozzle, or tool for an obstruction or poor connection.

      • Disconnect the accessory safely.
      • Inspect the hose opening.
      • Check the wand or tool.
      • Look for visible obstruction.
      • Reconnect the component securely.
      9
      Power

      Vacuum Will Not Turn On

Start with basic power checks before assuming the motor or electronics have failed.

      • Check the power connection.
      • Check the outlet where applicable.
      • Inspect the cord for visible damage.
      • For cordless models, follow charging instructions.
      • Seek service if the issue continues.
      Diagnostic Flow

      A Simple Vacuum Troubleshooting Order

If you do not know where to start, work through the checks in this order. It helps you investigate common user-accessible causes before moving to model-specific service.

      1. Power Confirm the vacuum has a safe, appropriate power connection.
      2. Airflow Check the bag, bin, filters, hose, inlet, and accessible airflow path.
      3. Floor Head Inspect the nozzle, brush roll, floor tool, and visible debris.
      4. Model Identify the exact model before replacing parts or seeking repair.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      Vacuum Troubleshooting FAQs

Answers to common questions about vacuum suction, brush rolls, noises, shutdowns, odors, blockages, and troubleshooting by brand.

Check the dust container or bag, filters, hose, floor head, nozzle, and brush roll for restrictions or visible debris. If the problem continues, identify the exact model and follow its troubleshooting instructions.

Start with the bag or dirt container, filters, hose, airflow path, and floor head. A restriction in any of these areas can affect airflow and cleaning performance.

Turn the vacuum off and inspect the brush roll and floor head for tangled hair, debris, blockage, or an improperly connected component. If the brush still does not operate, the issue may require model-specific diagnosis.

Check for common airflow restrictions, a full bag or dirt container, and accessible filter issues. If the vacuum repeatedly shuts off after these checks, stop using it and consult the model's instructions or qualified service.

Turn the vacuum off immediately and disconnect it from power. Do not continue operating or repeatedly testing the machine. A persistent burning smell should be evaluated by qualified service.

Stop the vacuum and check accessible areas such as the floor head, brush roll, hose, and attachments for visible debris or damage. If the unusual noise continues, professional inspection may be needed.

Check whether the bag or dirt container and accessible filters are correctly installed. Also inspect covers and seals for visible damage. Do not continue using the machine if a damaged component is suspected.

Yes. A restricted hose or airflow path can reduce the amount of air moving through the vacuum. Turn the machine off before inspecting or clearing an accessible blockage.

Not necessarily. First confirm the exact symptom and vacuum model. Some problems are caused by blockages, installation issues, or maintenance items rather than a failed component. Confirm compatibility before ordering a replacement part.

Start by checking the bin, accessible filters, wand, floor head, brush area, and visible blockages. Because Dyson models differ, confirm the procedure for your exact model before replacing parts.

Check the dust cup, filters, hose, floor head, brush roll, and visible blockages. Follow the instructions for the exact Shark model before performing model-specific maintenance.

Start with the bag or collection system, filters, hose, floor tool, and accessible airflow path. Identify the exact Miele model before choosing replacement bags, filters, or parts.

Check the bag, filters, hose, floor head, and accessible brush components. Confirm the exact SEBO model before ordering replacement parts or attempting model-specific repairs.

Consider professional service for persistent problems, electrical symptoms, burning smells, smoke, damaged cords or plugs, severe mechanical noises, repeated shutdowns, or any situation where you cannot safely identify the cause.

Start with the exact vacuum model and identify the component you need. Compare compatibility information carefully before ordering, especially for filters, bags, belts, brush components, hoses, and floor tools.

Still Having Trouble With Your Vacuum?

@JoyceNorton: I hear you. Those Shark uprights can really grab onto rugs when the suction is too strong.

Quick question: do you see a small suction bleeder (a little vent/slider or ring) on the hose or handle? If so, try opening it slightly, this lets a bit of air in and reduces the suction so the vacuum doesn’t “stick” to the rug.

If you’re not seeing one, let me know the model and I’ll point you exactly where to check

      • Joyce Norton - Apr 27, 2026

I have an upright Shark vacuum and I cannot get the suction adjusted for my 12×15 rug. I have tried everything and it seemingly wants toe to suction the whole rug up and I cannot get it adjusted to vacuum the whole rug. AAAAAGH! Frustrated!!!
